sunrise at dusk
Alain Fournier’s ‘Sunrise at Dusk’ is an addictive page-turning gem you will not put down so buckle up for this roller-coaster ride.
Set in the gritty projects of Toronto’s Regent Park during the mid 1980’s, Fournier takes his protagonist, 17-year old Jesse Decruz, through hell and back with you in tow. Immediately, Jesse suffers a severe trauma at the hands of his abusive alcoholic father that forever changes him. He survives, just barely. Add to that, his community and school are rot with rampant crime, violence, and drugs. But never under-estimate the power of the human spirit. Jesse takes matters into his own hands and commits to changing his orbit by striking up the most unlikely alliances that include an ambitious school principal and his own abusive born-again father. Together, with the unconditional love of his mother and a small loyal group of friends, Jesse claws back his life as Fournier weaves a gripping tale that slowly balances the power of good vs. evil and a conclusion that will leave you exhausted.
Beautifully told with an excellent mix of suspense, drama, and gut-busting humor, Fournier inserts all the necessary elements that engages and entertains the reader. Numerous episodes of conflict, then comic relief, will keep you off balance throughout. You become invested in the interesting lives and characters tied to Jesse’s world. Exchanges between Jesse’s friends and school administrators provides some of the best animated moments keeping you in stitches until Fournier decides to punch you in the gut again.
Sunrise at Dusk presents a real heart tugger with a sharp edge, but the message is simple; the sun can still rise even as darkness falls, you just need to find the light.
